The research, people and ideas behind eCulturalHeritage.

Our identity

Where cultural heritage meets technology and learning.

eCH — eCulturalHeritage showcases the research of Konstantinos Koukoulis at the intersection of culture, digital technologies and education.

Its focus includes collective memory, digital museum experiences, community participation and the use of technology to support learning and accessibility. Through research projects, applications and scientific publications, eCH explores how cultural heritage can become more accessible, participatory and meaningful for education.

Modern digital museum environments: design, implementation, evaluation, and educational perspectives

Konstantinos Koukoulis · University of Patras · Doctoral thesis, 2024
DOI: 10.12681/eadd/57707

Summary

The thesis examines how museums, particularly smaller institutions with limited resources, can adopt digital technologies to promote, manage and share their cultural collections. It investigates affordable technological solutions, the services digital museum environments can offer, principles for their design, and approaches to evaluating them.

Following a review and classification of technologies and their museum applications, the research develops design principles and tests them through the development, implementation and evaluation of digital exhibition services. These address organisations with physical collections as well as exhibitions based entirely on digital content. The thesis also explores the use of extended reality (XR) in art exhibitions, with a focus on educational perspectives.
